The Rising Hedons’ Bradley Tindall is, above all, a songwriter. Following in the footsteps of the much-loved storytellers Scott Cook & Faye Blais, Tindall sings of love, life and travel through an ever-expanding series of melodies. Combining blues and rock with elements of world music, the songs have a distinctly quirky flavour that is unique to his writing. After a hiatus of more than a year, Bradley returns to the stage with a suitcase full of new writings (about witches, disappearing brides and a red-tailed, horned woman who casts judgement upon all those who eat the lovely creatures of this Earth!). This is a rare chance to see these songs performed in an intimate setting.

The Skinny: HDR specialist | Dedicated to Independent Art | Web Skills +

Kyle Merriman’s portraits manage to capture personal moments without feeling invasive or staged and they present characters from varied social positions, from street vendors, to rock bands, to vacationers, to snake charmers.

While his interest in photography stemmed from a desire to document his travels for friends and family in Canada, he has branched out to artistic studies of the people and places he encounters.

It’s a unique talent to be unobtrusive. The people in Merriman’s portraits appear lost in thought, caught up in an adrenaline rush, focused on the tasks of their profession. In short, they’ve been captured in a way that strikes a chord with the viewer as being vivid and real. It’s Merriman’s empathy with his human subjects that shows a truly unique experience of the world.

You can see some of Merriman’s photographs at his current exhibit at the Lei Gallery at Stock 20 (through July 4, 2010) or on his website, www.brandknewme.com .

SPOTLIGHT – Scott Cook | By Rachel Sharp

Scott Cook | http://www.scottcook.net | grooverevival@gmail.com | (780) 695-3474

The Skinny: Two wonderful solo albums, tours constantly, captivating live performer.

Scott Cook is first and foremost a storyteller. His lyrics are visceral, relatable, and highlight the exceptional moments of everyday life. His sophomore solo album, “This One’s On the House”, centers around the experiences of a working class traveler. Cook describes the two-sided coin of life on the road—the freedom and the constant hustle for cash. He manages to do this with a realness that may not make you want to follow in his footsteps, but with a charm that’ll make you want to have a few beers and a conversation with the man.

During his recent tour of Taiwan, Cook reintroduced himself to the expat community he was once (and arguably still is) a part of. Cook spent six years in Taiwan, teaching English and playing music. He released his first solo album, “Long Way to Wander” here, and then he toured in his native Canada. He aims to follow in the footsteps of singer/songwriter and activist Pete Seeger, whom he reveres as someone who has used his music to lend a hand to causes he believes in.

He was welcomed back to Taiwan in style—he thanked a packed house at Retro in Taichung for “actually listening to the songs” and Dakeng Bohemien, ‘Boston’ Paul G. Davis, reported that a record number of over three hundred people were drawn to his show at the now infamous Refuge.

The title track of his latest release, “This One’s On The House (The Hobo Song)”, describes living in a van, police harassment, sneaking drinks into bars, and reminds listeners that “You sure can’t take it with you when you go/ Might as well get used to livin’ without now”. Another track with sage advice is “If It Won’t Break Your Heart”. Although it cites the state of world as “cruel” and full of people that “suck the soul [out] of it and give you back the grief”, its view is hopeful in the belief that through pain can come relief—“If it won’t break your heart, it ain’t love”. A song any teacher in Taiwan can relate to.

Although Scott Cook is living the dream many artists have—to make a living by making art—he articulates the innate dichotomy of expression and earning by uniquely comparing his job to others. In his opening track, “Carving Stone,” he says his occupation is “A lot like being a stripper, a lot of trying to turn drunks on”. During his live shows, he remains humble and grateful, signing CD’s for anyone that wants, but he’s also not averse to asking for a beer and a couple of dollars to pay for his cab fare. ||END||
